What is a CRB check?
A CRB check is simply a process which enables employers to check if your potential employee/volunteer has a criminal record. The information is provided by the Criminal Records Bureau, which is a government agency that can disclose police records for eligible jobs and volunteer posts.
Why might I want to ask for a CRB check?
Employers can use the information to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially work involving children or adults who may be classed as vulnerable.
The CRB check can complement other vetting processes you use such as interviews and reference checking.
How can the ILA help me to get a CRB check?
The ILA is a registered 'umbrella body' for the CRB. This means we can process CRB disclosures for organisations and individuals who engage people to work with children or adults who may be vulnerable.
We will:
What type of jobs should have a CRB check?
The law allows CRB checks for 'regulated activity', which is work that involves contact with children or adults who may be classed as vulnerable where:
(i) the type of work involves close personal contact AND
(ii) the work is done on a regular basis.
The types of work where CRB checks should be done includes teaching, instructing, supervising, driving, caring for, providing guidance or treatment when these involve children or adults who may be classed as vulnerable.
There are some roles where CRB checks can be requested, no matter how often the work is done eg directors/trustees of charities for children or vulnerable adults.
The ILA cannot undertake CRB checks for self employed individuals, if you are self employed and require a CRB check please contact a registered recruitment agency.
If you receive West Sussex County Council (WSCC) Social Services money called 'Direct Payments', you can take up CRB checks for personal Assistants (PAs), through the ILA (this is funded for you by WSCC).
Can ILA take up CRB checks where the work is not with children/vulnerable adults?
Sometimes - but only if the work is amongst a list of specified jobs and professions. These jobs and professions are listed in a Government Act (Exceptions Order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974). If you would like further information about either the Government Act or the type of jobs and professions that are included in this section, please visit the CRB official website and follow the link below:

I've heard about 'ISA registration', what is this?
ISA is the Independent Safeguarding Authority that works alongside the CRB. ISA is responsible for maintaining a list of people who have been "barred" from working with children or adults who may be classed as vulnerable.
ISA calls this the 'Vetting and Barring Scheme'.
For further information please visit the ISA official website:
www.isa-gov.org.uk and click on the Vetting and Barring scheme guidance, March 2010.
